Mass Intentions Explained
When a priest offers Holy Mass, he has three purposes: firstly, to offer the Mass reverently and validly in accord with the norms of the Church; secondly, to offer the Mass in union with the whole Church and for the good of the whole Church; and thirdly, to offer the Mass for a particular intention.
Offering Mass for a special intention (eg for the souls of Purgatory, in celebration of a birthday or anniversary, or in remembrance for someone who has died) is a long-standing tradition in the Church, by which special graces are obtained for those for whom the Mass is said.
Every Sunday a Mass will be said for the People of the Parish (“Missa Pro Populo”), and of course the priest who says Mass will have intentions of his own to be offered. With this in mind, parishioner who would like to have a Mass celebrated for a particular intention are invited to write it down on a piece of paper and hand to Fr Chris in the Sacristy – their Mass Intention will then normally be applied to a weekday Mass. In exceptional circumstances (for example, if the anniversary of the death of a loved one should happen to fall on a Sunday), then the intentions may be applied to a Sunday Mass, if there is one available.
Parishioners requesting a Mass Intention may wish to give a financial offering (or a ‘stipend’). Tee giving of this offering signifies the sacrifical nature of giving of something of oneself to associate more intimately with Jesus Christ who offers himself in the Eucharist. It is important to remeber that this offering is not paying for the graces from God (which are of infinite value and cannot be paid for), but for material things that are involved with celebrating that particular Mass and for the support of the priest who makes the celebration of Mass possible. It should also be noted that a request for a Mass Intention would never be rejected for the lack of a stipend.
It should be borne in mind that the special graces of a Mass Intention depend neither upon the intention being ‘read out’ at the Mass nor upon the person requesting the Mass Intention being in attendance.
Mass Intentions can be requested by seeing Fr Chris or emailing presbytery@outlook.com.
May God bless and protect you.
